The cuts on the base of the glass are a representative Edo Kiriko pattern called "nanako" (fish roe). This nanako pattern changes as it approaches the rim of the glass, expanding outwards. The nanako pattern is characterized by intersecting cuts applied without gaps, but by creating small gaps between the intersecting cuts, the design transitions into "yarai," another representative pattern. This glass was crafted by Kobayashi Glass Studio, one of the Edo Kiriko workshops that has been in operation for nearly 100 years. Currently, the studio is run by the third-generation owner, Yoshirō Kobayashi, and his son, the fourth-generation Kōhei. This particular glass is a work by the third-generation Yoshirō.

Profile

Kobayashi Glass Art Studio | Tokyo Crystal Glass | Kiriko, Sagging (Kiln Work)
Founded in 1908, the techniques are now passed down to the third-generation Yoshio and fourth-generation Kohei. They create intricate and luxurious all-over patterned works, as well as jewelry and pieces made from glass blanks using their original "sagging kiriko" technique. Kobayashi Glass Art Studio is one of the "Edo Kiriko" studios with a history of nearly 100 years. The studio is currently run by the third-generation Yoshio Kobayashi and the fourth-generation Kohei. This glass was created by the third-generation Yoshio. Yoshio has received awards at the "Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition" organized by the Japan Crafts Association and has had his works selected as gifts for former Russian President Gorbachev, making him one of the prominent figures in Japan's "Edo Kiriko" scene.
