As autumn deepens, how are you all doing? I find that reading a few pages each day helps to calm my mind. When I pick up a history book and find a passage about glass, it always brings a smile to my face. The thought of what contemporary artists create, stemming from the accidental discovery of turning white sand into glass, excites me.

Today, we introduce a single flower vase by Yuichi Yamazaki, who lives and works in Kanagawa Prefecture. He has two distinct styles: the pale green "Hakka" series and colorful vases made with sandblasting. This time, we're featuring his smaller single flower vase series.

By using a technique called sandblasting, the surface of layered colored glass is abraded to bring out patterns. The rough texture and appearance, when placed next to clear glass, can even resemble ceramics.

Patterns are hand-drawn with adhesive, and then fine sand is sprayed at high speed to carve the glass. The technique involves peeling off the adhesive to reveal the original glass beneath, making the pattern emerge. Yamazaki's vessels are characterized by combining different colors in the ground and pattern, as he layers colored glass.

The single flower vases we introduced today are small, less than 10cm. It's fun to pick out your favorite, and we also recommend arranging several unique pieces together as if they're friendly companions (an arrangement tip I actually learned from a customer!).
We hope you can imagine these lovely glass vessels, even without flowers, resting gracefully in a corner of your room.
Yuichi Yamazaki's single flower vases are available at our Asakusa store, Ginza store, and through our online shop. (Please inquire with each store for stock availability.)
While the items we introduce may not be necessities, we hope they bring a sense of comfort and richness to your life. Our entire staff looks forward to your visit.
