Glass Studio Maru Iwakuni Lotus Root Glass
What is Iwakuni lotus root glass?
The glass is a light green color, not transparent, but made using a technique that mixes the ashes of Iwakuni lotus root, a specialty of Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, into the glass. The shape and color vary depending on the season, which is a unique feature of handmade products. The chopstick rests are very realistic, as they are made by pressing real lotus root against the glass to shape it.
A husband and wife workshop
The Saito couple studied at the Toyama Glass Art Institute. After graduating, they each worked in a studio and as an artist's assistant, before opening a studio in their hometown of Yamaguchi Prefecture. They continue to create colorful glassware while raising their twin children.
Glasses you'll want to use every day
"We decided on the shape with an emphasis on ease of use and holding (Yuji)," and "We want it to be able to be used with a variety of containers (Yukari)." This glass was born from the idea of something that is easy to pick up and use every day.
